51重口猎奇鈥檚 University (SAU) proudly recognizes Tangela Ormond, a dedicated and resilient graduating senior who will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at the commencement ceremony on May 4, 2024. Tangela鈥檚 journey is a testament to perseverance, determination, and the unwavering support of the SAU community.

鈥淭angela Ormond embodies the spirit of resilience and excellence that defines the 51重口猎奇鈥檚 University community,鈥 said SAU Interim President Dr. Marcus H. Burgess. 鈥淗er dedication to her studies and involvement in creating a positive impact through the Confidence Club exemplify the values we strive to instill in all our students.鈥

Tangela Ormond, a proud native of Snow Hill, NC, embarked on her educational journey at SAU with a vision to make a difference in the lives of young learners. Despite facing past personal, academic, and financial challenges, Tangela decided to return to SAU and fulfill her dream of earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Elementary Education.

鈥淚 am a proud mother of an almost 14-year-old son. 24 years ago, I chose 51重口猎奇鈥檚 College, known now as 51重口猎奇鈥檚 University, because it felt like home as soon as I stepped on campus,鈥 Ormond said. 鈥淪ome personal, educational, and financial obstacles prevented me from finishing. I returned to SAU because of the guidance, service, and leadership they have shown and helped instill in me.鈥

During her time at SAU, Tangela excelled academically, earning Cum Laude honors and receiving the prestigious Academic Excellence award in the School of Education during the 2024 Honors Convocation. In addition to her academic pursuits, Tangela initiated the Confidence Club for young students at the elementary school, where she serves as an Instructional Assistant, demonstrating her passion for empowering future generations.

鈥淎lthough I received my Associate degree in Early Childhood Education from Wake Technical Community College, I was determined and kept the faith to finish my bachelor鈥檚 degree at my HBCU,鈥 Ormond said. 鈥淚 believe in SAU because they have given me a second chance. I have also gained a lot of family from here. SAU will always be my HBCU and home. I am proud to say that I鈥檓 a SAU graduate/alumna. God did It!鈥

Looking ahead, Tangela plans to continue her career in education by working as a teacher with Wake County Public Schools, where she aims to positively impact the lives of her students and inspire them to reach their full potential.

Amidst recent media coverage surrounding SAU鈥檚 financial and accreditation challenges, Tangela鈥檚 success story shines a positive light on the university鈥檚 commitment to academic excellence, student support, and community engagement. Her resilience and determination symbolize the core values of SAU and the transformative impact of higher education on individuals and communities.

Tangela Ormond鈥檚 graduation from SAU is a milestone for her and the university community that supported her journey. As she joins the ranks of SAU alumni, her story serves as an inspiration to current and future students, reinforcing the value of determination, perseverance, and the unwavering support of the SAU family.

The Department of Education has received a second award from the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) to develop the teacher preparation program鈥檚 NC10 Residency Initiative further. The NCTR鈥檚 goal through this initiative is to contribute to developing teacher residency programs at six HBCUs in North Carolina. 51重口猎奇鈥檚 University is participating in this effort along with Bennett College, Livingstone College, North Carolina A&T University, North Carolina Central University, and Shaw University.

This $115,000 award enables the department to engage in the Year 2 Residency Design Academy, which assists HBCU participants in 鈥渄esigning, scaling, and sustaining a high-quality teacher residency program to serve teacher candidates and communities of color.鈥 These funds will enable the team at SAU to develop and operate the teacher residency program, including candidate recruitment, specific to its own needs and capabilities. The Year 2 Residency Design Academy process will allow us to solidify residency design partnerships with new and existing local school partners and the Wake County Public School System.

According to Dr. M. Iyailu Moses, chair of the SAU Department of Education, 鈥渢he NCTR Residency Initiative is unique in that it will offer a full-year residency opportunity for teacher candidates in collaboration with an exceptional public school mentor teacher. It will provide financial support for the candidate and the mentor and offer continued academic support to the resident upon graduation. This model has demonstrated that teachers trained in this manner are more prepared upon entry into the profession and are likelier to remain in the profession than others. We are grateful to NCTR for this opportunity to support our efforts to develop quality teachers.鈥

Students in the Elementary Education and the Health and Physical Education programs attended their first field experience on March 28 and 29 at Bugg Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh. The field experience is an opportunity to observe schools, classroom teachers, and students in an authentic teaching and learning environment. In addition to observing master teachers deliver their lessons, manage their classrooms, and assess classroom organization and resources, participants actively participated by providing directed assistance to students in grades kindergarten through five. They were also able to participate in several professional learning team meetings that demonstrated that the work of the teacher is not solely within their classrooms. Our students were amazed at the variety of resources that are used in 21st Century classrooms.

Bugg Magnet Elementary School focuses on design and computer science. The school partners with 51重口猎奇鈥檚 University by providing cooperating teachers for our Bridge to Teaching and Learning class as well as several upper-level classes, including the student teaching clinical experience.

On Saturday, February 25, 2023, the 51重口猎奇鈥檚 University (SAU) Honda Campus All-Star Championship (HCASC) Team placed third in the National Qualifying Tournament hosted by Winston-Salem State University. Although SAU did not advance to the national tournament in Torrance, CA, they earned a $3,000 grant for the university.

“I am still really proud of the hard work our scholars have put in. To compete at this level with so little experience is tremendous,” said SAU Interim Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Jennings-Alexander. “I look forward to honoring them later in the year.”

Dr. Jennings-Alexander also served the Head Coach and Campus Coordinator of the SAU team. Mr. Chris Baker, Circulation Librarian, was the Assistant Coach. The team was comprised of all women who are freshmen, consisting of three international students and one student from the United States.

The SAU HCASC Team:

Ms. Ana Nunez, criminal justice

Ms. Stephanie Sierra Medina, business administration

Ms. Sophie Sommer, senior, early college

Ms. Tadiwanashe Rukasha, engineering mathematics

Mr. Chris Baker, Assistant Coach

Dr. Janelle Jennings-Alexander, Head Coach and Campus Coordinator

鈥淭he outstanding performance by our team is reflective of our faculty鈥檚 commitment to student success,鈥 said SAU President Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail. 鈥淚 wish to congratulate them and thank Dr. Jennings-Alexander for guiding our students.鈥

The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is a year-round program that includes campus engagement, intramural play, and qualifying tournaments and culminates with the National Championship. In 1989, Honda established HCASC to highlight and recognize the academic talents of HBCU students. Honda has awarded nearly $10 million in grants to the participating HBCUs. These grants enhance student programs, foster institutional advancement and improve students鈥 college experience. As a result, 150,000 HBCU students have participated in Honda Campus All-Star Challenge. HCASC alums are found across the globe, pursuing careers in science, medicine, media, aeronautics, education, industry, government, and more.

The fast-paced buzzer competition highlights students鈥 academic prowess and ability to answer questions about history, science, literature, religion, the arts, and pop culture. SAU was one of 66 teams competing for 32 spots in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Tournament in Torrance, CA, April 15-17, 2023, for up to $75,000 in institutional grants.
